Our operating Rules

On Wednesday, 23 October 2013, the General Fono endorsed the Statistics Rules 2013 in their final reading. The Statistics Rules describe the responsibilities and functions of the TNSO, and the wider official statistical system.

These responsibilities and functions include the:

  • collection, processing, analysis, publication, and dissemination of statistical information on social, demographic, economic, and financial activities in Tokelau
  • coordination and integration of statistical activities across government, in accordance with recognised international statistical standards
  • responsibility of the TNSO to coordinate statistical activities.

Our operating policies

This section outlines the major policies the Tokelau National Statistics Office operates under.

Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics
It is critical that a statistical system has the confidence of national and international users of statistics. To this end the United Nations developed a set of fundamental principles for official statistics. On 18 April 2013, the Council for the Ongoing Government of Tokelau endorsed the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics. The Principles are employed as high-level policy for the Office's statistical activities, and harmonised to Tokelau’s unique situation. They provide guidance to, and inform discussions between the Office, government, data users, and respondents.

Statements of intent
The statements of intent set out what the Tokelau National Statistics Office aims to achieve during each financial year, both for the Office and for Tokelau. For the latest version available, email a request to: tnso@tokelau.org.nz
