Two Graduate Eye Care Technicians

eye1Metita Puka and Pale Kolopa are the first two graduates from Tokelau to graduate as Eye Care technicians.
These health workers have been studying in Fiji for eight months at the Fred Hollows Foundation including pre-study placement at the Samoa National Hospital.
Both ladies are excited and have not wasted any time taking a break but have immediately worked within their Villages, according to the Director of Health, Lee Pearce.
“Currently they are screening their respective populations in Fakaofo and Nukunonu before both going to Atafu to screen that population. They can diagnose, treat & prescribe simple eye conditions and       Metita shows her new tools to the Ulu
also have set up their own network for ordering glasses,” director stated.
Both ladies were funded by Fred Hollows Foundation – a Charitable organisation that was set up in the name of its founder to improve access, treatment’ & training for Pacific Island countries
Both wish to pursue further training in the field of Ophthalmology.

About Tokelau


Tokelau consists of three atolls located about 483 km north of Western Samoa. Atafu is the northernmost atoll, 92 km north of Nukunonu, which in turn lies 64 km north of Fakaofo.

Each atoll consist of a number of reef-bound islets (motu) encircling a lagoon. The islets vary in size from 90 m to 6 km in length and from a few metres to 200 metres in width. The largest atoll is Nukunonu at 4.7 sq km. Fakaofo and Atafu are 4 sq km and 3.5 sq km respectively. From Atafu in the north to Fakaofo in the south, the group extends for just under 200 km. The atolls are three to five metres above sea level.
