Tokelau 3P Underway
The programme targets to develop 3 main key activities for Tokelau Police . These are to develop Tokelau Police Strategic Plan, Introducing and promoting Pacific Policing Skills in Tokelau and Improving Tokelau Community Policing The New Zealand Police representatives namely Police Sergeant Terry Gibbons (Community Policing specialist) and International Project Officer, Maima Koro are currently in Tokelau to consult with the Police and Communities to gather their views on priorities on police needs. The outcome of these village consultations will enable the development of the Tokelau Police Strategic Plan. This Plan is very important for Tokelau as this will provide the platform of how New Zealand Police engage and provide assistance to Tokelau Police under this partnership programme. The Tokelau Judicial National Coordinator Lihe Hope Suveinakama commented that “The Tokelau Police Strategic Plan would tie in with the Tokelau National Strategic Plan outcome of building a safer and law-abiding Tokelau”. Tokelau has sixteen officers across it’s three islands. Ulu o Tokelau Meets President of FijiFaipule Salesio Lui, the Ulu o Tokelau met with the President of Fiji His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau while in Fiji for a 3 day visit.
Aliki Faipule Salesio Lui is currently in Fiji as the Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific. During the visit to Government House yesterday afternoon, Aliki Faipule Salesio Lui briefed the President of Fiji in regard to the progress of the University's Strategic Plan 2013-2018. "The launch of the USP Strategic Plan puts the University of the South Pacific in a 'positive space' to deliver its vision and aspirations as the institution of excellence of our region" Faipule Salesio said. They also spoke about renewable energy. There were experiences that could assist countries to strengthen the future of renewable energy in the region. Aliki Faipule Salesio Lui also congratulated the President of Fiji in regard to the arrival of Fiji Airway's new aircraft and also wished the Government and the people of Fiji all the best in its constitutional endeavors. "It is heart warming to hear the President talk passionately about Fiji's constitutional situation. We continue to pray for the Almighty's strength for the people of Fiji" Faipule Salesio said. Early on Wednesday this week, Aliki Faipule Salesio Lui participated in awarding more than 20 gold medals to the most outstanding students in their respective fields of studies at the 2013 Medals and Prizes ceremony at the Oceania Centre at the Laucala Campus. Today, Aliki Faipule Salesio Lui will be conferring certificates to about 990 students that will be graduating from the University of the South Pacific. Faipule Salesio will depart Fiji after the USP Graduation today on his way back to Tokelau via Samoa. Tokelau government takes action to protect its most valuable resourceHowever, the Government of Tokelau's concerned that this successful management of its most economically valuable natural resource could be undermined by illegal fishing.The protection of one of its only sustainable revenue sources is critical to the future of Tokelau. Recently Tokelau has been working in partnership with New Zealand to increase the penalties for illegal fishing in Tokelau’s EEZ. The current penalties were set over 35 years ago and no longer provide an effective deterrent to illegal fishing. New Zealand and Tokelau are working together to ensure that Tokelau's concerns over the penalties clause are satisfactorily addressed. It is hoped that the new more stringent penalty regime will be in place before the end of 2013. To better manage the risks of illegal fishing in its EEZ, Tokelau is also working collaboratively with other Pacific Island Countries. Under the Niue Treaty and the TeVaka Toa arrangement Tokelau works with other Pacific Island Countries on fisheries law enforcement activities. Tokelau shares a state of the art satellite-based Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) with other Pacific Island Countries and works closely with NZ Defence Forces in aerial and surface surveillance activities. Tokelau’s vessel monitoring and surveillance activities are coordinated out of the Department of Economic Development, Natural Resources and Environments’fisheries division office on Fakaofo.
