Ulu o Tokelau arrives in Fiji for the 11th Pacific Health Ministers Meeting

15 April 2010

The Ulu o Tokelau, Aliki Faipule Siopili Perez arrives in Fiji for the 11th Pacific Health Ministers Meeting at Yanuca Island's Shnagri-La Fijian Resort. The Ulu o Tokelau is attending the meeting as the Minister of Health for the Government of Tokelau.

Twenty years ago in 1995 on Yanuca Island, the 1st Pacific Health Ministers Meeting (PHMM) declared their vision of Healthy Islands. The 11th PHMM will focus on achievements, challenges and way forward under the Healthy Islands journey 1995-2015. Health has improved in the Pacific in the last 20 years, but progress has been slower than in other parts of the world, and there is a risk of the Pacific falling behind.

Ministers will be able to discuss challenges of implementing health initiatives and proposed future directions to reinforce, amongst other things, the healthy islands vision and operating the vision at national level.

The Meeting will be held for 3 days from 15-17 April. Mr Perez is accompanied by Mrs Ta'ase Perez, General Manager, Apia, Joe Suveinakama, and Health senior official, Alapati Tavite.

Mr Perez also plans to meet with the Tokelau students in Fiji before departing Fiji on Friday to travel to American Samoa to attend the Flag Day Commemoration.
