Solid Waste Management: MOU Signed between Tokelau EDNRE and Pacific Recycle Co. Ltd

EDNRE-64

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Economic Development, Natural Resources and Environment (EDNRE) and the Pacific Recycle Co. Ltd was signed on 1 December 2017 at the TALO Office in Apia, Samoa.

The MoU, signed by Director of EDNRE, Mr. Mikaele Perez, and the Director-General of the Pacific Recycle Co. Ltd, Mr Silafau John Sio, is to create a mutual agreement between the two parties to work in a cooperative partnership arrangement, to improve the overall management of waste in all three atolls. Clear mandates have been established between the Government of Samoa and the Government of Tokelau in a wider auspices agreement, that was reached in 2007 in compliance with laws and regulation of the Government of Samoa. This also provides a framework within which the threats and adverse impacts of waste to the people, economy, and environment of Tokelau will be managed.

Waste Management has been identified as an urgent priority area for Tokelau, particularly with the increasing amount of waste currently being disposed on the atolls. Due to its geographical features, Tokelau remains extremely vulnerable to a range of issues that adversely impact low-lying coral atolls. During the recent ENDRE’s policy review consultation, a strong consensus emerged within the communities that the problem of waste management needed to be addressed immediately.

In response, EDNRE has put in efforts to address the above concerns; on this very day, it has sealed a deal with the Pacific Recycle Co. Ltd of Samoa to look at ways where both parties can work together to service the people and the community of Tokelau at large in managing Tokelau’s solid waste.

EDNRE and PR do look forward to a productive and wonderful partnership.
