Lakei Tokelau Fashion Charity EventIn early April 1999, 17 determined young Tokelau women from Wellington, New Zealand, united with one vision in mind, to celebrate Tokelau culture through the medium of fashion and design.
The Lakei Tokelau Group was born and seven gruelling months later their dream realised on 24 November 2000. The Lakei Tokelau Fashion Charity event was staged at the Akapuanga Hall in Cannons Creek, Porirua. More than 600 people, including the Prime Minister of New Zealand Helen Clark attended the fashion event, which was a first for the Tokelauan community in New Zealand. It was the first Tokelauan event that Helen Clark had attended as Prime Minister of New Zealand. The audience was treated to a spectacular show of creative garments by gifted Tokelau designers, and were also entertained by talented entertainers including Te Kaha from Auckland and the St Bernard's College band Soljahs Clucha.
The Overall Designer Trophy (a beautiful mother of pearl shell mounted in Kanava wood) was awarded to Safata Lapana, the garment modelled by Lisi Gaualofa was intricately woven fibre attained from the Kanava Tree, a native plant of Tokelau. The event also raised more than $10,800 for the Tokelau Bible translation project which is currently underway in New Zealand.
